The Best Procedures for Creating a Masculine Jawline

When we think of the quintessential “attractive” man, a chiseled, well-defined jawline is often one of the defining features that comes to mind. As it turns out, there is some science behind why generations upon generations have historically viewed a square jawline as an ideal masculine facial feature. Studies have shown a direct correlation between higher levels of testosterone and squared, well-defined jawlines in men. With higher testosterone often comes conventionally masculine traits such as dominance, confidence and strength.

It is no wonder, then, that achieving a strong, defined jawline is one of the most common cosmetic requests among men. Because genetics play such an integral role in the appearance of your jawline and chin, lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise are typically not enough to dramatically change the appearance of a man’s jawline. There are, however, a number of jawline enhancement treatments and procedures that can help you achieve this common cosmetic goal.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are a popular option for male jawline enhancement, as they do not require surgery or downtime, yet can achieve a natural-looking and long-lasting result. Strategically placed injectable fillers can add volume above the masseter muscle, which is located on either side of the jaw and is largely responsible for creating that well-defined, strong jawline that is so desired among men. Fillers can also help to better define the chin and improve the appearance of a double chin.

A typical dermal filler treatment takes less than 30 minutes and can be conveniently scheduled during a lunch break, as there is no downtime afterwards. While you may see noticeable results directly after your appointment, it can take up to two weeks for your final result to develop. Hyaluronic acid fillers can last up to 18 months before a maintenance treatment will be necessary.

Chin Augmentation

Chin augmentation is another popular treatment option used to enhance the chin and jawline. Some men choose chin augmentation vs. dermal fillers because chin augmentation offers long-term results, whereas fillers require maintenance treatments every 12 to 18 months.

During chin augmentation surgery, your plastic surgeon will create small incisions either inside your mouth or under your chin. Mandibular implants are then inserted through those incisions, which are then sutured and dressed. Because this is a surgical procedure, there is some recovery time required. Most people are able to return to work and other normal daily activities within one week after chin augmentation.

Chin Liposuction

Chin liposuction, also called double chin surgery, can be performed on its own or in conjunction with chin augmentation. Excess submental fat, commonly referred to as a “double chin,” is one of the most common facial cosmetic complaints among both men and women. Unfortunately, fat in this area of the face can be difficult or even impossible to get rid of through traditional weight loss methods like diet and exercise alone. For this reason, many people choose cosmetic treatments such as chin liposuction to achieve a sleeker and more well-defined chin and jawline.

Recovery from chin liposuction is similar to that after chin augmentation, with most people able to return to work within a week after their procedure.

Neck Lift

In some cases, a weak jawline is caused by excess or loose skin in the neck and jowls. In this instance, a neck lift may be the most effective treatment option to achieve a more chiseled jawline. During a neck lift, incisions are typically placed in front of and behind the ears. Your plastic surgeon can then tighten the skin and sculpt and reshape the neck and jawline by redistributing fatty tissue.

Neck lifts are commonly combined with facelifts, chin augmentation or chin liposuction, depending on your specific needs and goals. Most people are able to return to work within 1 to 2 weeks after getting a neck lift.

Combining Jawline Procedures

Sometimes, a single jawline enhancement treatment may not be the most effective option to achieve the desired result. When this is the case, your plastic surgeon may recommend combining cosmetic treatments in order to give you the most comprehensive results possible. Chin augmentation and liposuction, for example, are commonly combined to treat a double chin and add volume and definition to the jawline at the same time. Similarly, some people choose to include chin liposuction with a neck lift or facelift.

During your consultation, your plastic surgeon will discuss in detail your treatment options for male jawline enhancement and will help you choose the best fit for your unique situation and cosmetic goals.
