Randy Douthit On Achieving Success Through Meditation

As producer and director of Judy Justice, Randy Douthit churns out over 100 episodes in just three months. It’s no easy feat. But thanks to a meditation practice he adopted early on, he’s able to thrive under pressure.

In college, philosopher Walter Russell’s teachings opened Douthit’s eyes. Russell believed true wisdom already resides within ourselves, waiting to be unearthed. Meditation became Douthit’s vehicle to tap into this creative force.

“You open up your mind and relax and just let things happen,” Douthit says of his morning meditation routine. “You don’t want to force your thoughts. You just want to be able to think of good things and then stop thinking totally.”

This ritual allows Douthit to get centered before tackling a hectic shoot. As a director, he has to coordinate cameras and action on the fly. Grounding himself first is key to nailing each take.

Douthit takes the same tactical approach on the racetrack. Before hitting full throttle, he’ll slowly drive the course to become one with it. In work and play, this mindfulness keeps Douthit focused.

After nearly 30 years alongside Judge Judy, Douthit has directed down pat. “I’ve got to make sure the cameras are covering the right thing at the right time,” he says. Staying present amidst the moving parts is crucial.

In the end, Douthit credits his longevity in show business to achieving inner calm. While television is fast-paced, meditation helps him take it all in stride.
